BigBelly Solar Trash Receptacles

The National Security Agency strives to maintain world-class environmental programs and actively pursues "green" initiatives that protect the environment and health of employees, customers and local communities. NSA is committed to operating in a manner that provides tailored services to the corporation that meet the needs of the workforce while simultaneously protecting the environment and conserving resources.

In support of these initiatives, NSA has launched a new "green" initiative with the installation of the BigBelly Solar Trash and Recycling Receptacles. These trash receptacles will help satisfy the need for outdoor trash collection and further enhance NSA's recycling capabilities. The BigBellys are installed around the building exterior entrances throughout the Fort Meade Campus.

The BigBelly is a solar compactor with integrated recycling units and is the only system currently available that offers on-site compaction of solid waste and separation of recyclable materials. This compacting receptacle is self-powered by obtaining 100% of its energy from solar power. BigBelly receptacles are the same size as standard trash receptacles; however, because of improved compacting technology, their capacity is five times greater than a standard receptacle. BigBellys are equipped with 50-gallon leak proof bins that help to decrease odor and eliminate the potential of pollutant runoff into our local waterways. Thanks to BigBelly's greater capacity, fewer collection trips are required. Fewer collection trips add up to many environmental benefits that include reduced emissions of greenhouse gases and other pollutants, as well as cost savings from reduced fuel use, labor, and maintenance. BigBelly was also designed to keep out unwanted pests thus providing a safer and cleaner environment.

This effort is just another example of NSA's "greening" successes that continue to improve recycling programs, conserve resources, and reduce the volume of landfill waste.
