NSA/CSS Memorial Day Observance Honored Vitenam Era Cryptologic Heroes

On 31 May 2011, GEN Keith B. Alexander, USA, Director, National Security Agency/ Chief, Central Security Service honored the service and sacrifice of SP4 Arthur W. Glover, USA and PFC Donald R. Taylor, USA, during the Agency's annual Memorial Day Observance.

Specialist Glover and Private Taylor were members of the 3rd Radio Research Unit (RRU); these soldiers were engaged in providing and protecting information that helps our military win battles and save lives. Specialist Glover focused on the collection of critical enemy communications and Private Taylor worked the other side of the Cryptologic mission by securing communications for vital U.S military and government organizations stationed in Vietnam. These men are examples of both NSA's missions hard at work during war time.

On February 9, 1964, Specialist Glover and Private Taylor, were at a gathering of 150 soldiers, sailors, embassy civilians, spouses and children, when two consecutive explosions hit the area. The explosions injured 23 individuals and killed SP4 Glover and PFC Taylor.

The names of both men are engraved on the NSA/CSS Cryptologic Memorial Wall. The wall, dedicated in 1996, lists the names of 163 Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine, and civilian cryptologists who have made the ultimate sacrifice, "serving in silence," in the performance of their duties since World War II. The ceremony included a traditional wreath laying and was attended by friends and distinguished guests.

Additional information on the Memorial Wall and a special historical monograph highlighting SP4 Glover and PFC Taylor's lives, service, and sacrifice can be viewed via the NSA/CSS web site at /about/cryptologic-heritage/cryptologic-memorial/.
