FORT MEADE, Md. — The National Security Agency (NSA), Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) released a Cybersecurity Advisory, Chinese State-Sponsored Cyber Operations: Observed TTPs. This advisory describes over 50 tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs) Chinese state-sponsored cyber actors used when targeting U.S. and allied networks, and details mitigations.

The Making of a Military Linguist: Col. Alva Lasswell, USMC

FORT MEADE, Md. — Language analysts have always been an important part of intelligence work. After World War I, as the U.S. Navy saw an ever-increasing threat from the Empire of Japan, the leadership decided to set up a language program to train naval personnel as skilled language analysts. However, one of the participants, NSA Hall of Honor member Col Alva Lasswell, may never have studied the Japanese language if not for a serendipitous meeting.

NSA, Partners Release Cybersecurity Advisory on Brute Force Global Cyber Campaign

FORT MEADE, Md. — The National Security Agency (NSA), Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) released a Cybersecurity Advisory today exposing malicious cyber activities by Russian military intelligence against U.S. and global organizations, starting from mid-2019 and likely ongoing. This advisory is being released as part of NSA's routine and continuing cybersecurity mission to warn network defenders of nation state threats.

NSA Funds Development, Release of D3FEND

FT. MEADE, Md. — D3FEND, a framework for cybersecurity professionals to tailor defenses against specific cyber threats is now available through MITRE.  NSA funded MITRE’s research for D3FEND to improve the cybersecurity of National Security Systems, the Department of Defense, and the Defense Industrial Base. The D3FEND technical knowledge base of defensive countermeasures for common offensive techniques is complementary to MITRE’s ATT&CK, a knowledge base of cyber adversary behavior.

NSA Releases Guidance on Securing Unified Communications and Voice and Video over IP Systems

FORT MEADE, Md. — NSA released a Cybersecurity Technical Report today that provides best practices and mitigations for securing Unified Communications (UC) and Voice and Video over IP (VVoIP) call-processing systems. The comprehensive report, “Deploying Secure Unified Communications/Voice and Video over IP Systems,” also describes potential risks to UC/VVoIP systems that aren’t properly secured.

During the 2021 Federal Laboratory Consortium (FLC) National Meeting, Linda Burger, Director of the NSA Office of Research and Technology Applications (ORTA), was elected to serve as the FLC Executive Board Chair, the organization’s highest elected position. She will serve a two-year term starting in October 2021.
