Headline Puzzle: December 2024

The Headline Puzzle is a monthly feature that was started in 1964 by Paul Derthick, a longtime research analyst in NSA’s Operations Organization, as an interesting way to keep his mind sharp outside of his cryptanalytic work. Each Headline Puzzle contains five headlines from recent daily newspapers. Each of the five is a different monoalphabetic substitution, and all five are derived from the same mixed alphabet at different settings against itself. A complete solution includes recovering the plaintext of each HEADLINE and three key words, the SETTING, the KEY and the HAT.

NSA Releases Top Ten Cloud Security Mitigation Strategies

The National Security Agency (NSA) is releasing “Top Ten Cloud Security Mitigation Strategies” to inform cloud customers about important security practices as they shift their data to cloud environments. The report is a compilation of ten Cybersecurity Information Sheets (CSIs), each on a different strategy. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) joins NSA as a partner on six of the ten strategies.

NSA Releases Future Quantum-Resistant (QR) Algorithm Requirements for National Security Systems

The National Security Agency (NSA) released the “Announcing Commercial National Security Algorithm Suite 2.0” (CNSA 2.0) Cybersecurity Advisory (CSA) today to notify National Security Systems (NSS) owners, operators and vendors of the future quantum-resistant (QR) algorithms requirements for NSS — networks that contain classified information or are otherwise critical to military and intelligence activities.
