NSA/CSS Cryptologic Memorial Wall Observance Honored 1960'€™s Era Cryptologic Heroes

FORT MEADE, Md.   –

On May 31, 2016, ADM Michael S. Rogers, USN, Director of National Security Agency / Chief of Central Security Service, honored the service and sacrifice of SP5 Timothy F. Powell Jr., USA, and of 2LT George P. Samples, USA, during the Agency's annual Cryptologic Memorial Wall Observance.

Specialist Powell and Second Lieutenant Samples were members of the 313th Military Intelligence Battalion, whose mission was to provide critical information to the U.S. Army forces in harm's way. The two cryptologists made the ultimate sacrifice during the largely forgotten 1965 invasion of the Dominican Republic, in which dozens of American service members lost their lives. The 313th performed the task of providing essential intelligence regarding rebel plans and attacks during the conflict.

On the morning of May 13, 1965, Specialist Powell and Second Lieutenant Samples were transporting a collection of documents to company headquarters through the newly secured "safe corridor" in the capital city. However, after a mistaken turn, the men entered the rebel controlled area, where they were killed by enemy fire.

The names of both men were engraved on the NSA/CSS Cryptologic Memorial Wall during its dedication in 1996. Today, the Cryptologic Memorial Wall contains the names of 176 Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine, and civilian cryptologists who have made the ultimate sacrifice, "serving in silence," in the performance of their duties since World War II. Today's ceremony told the story of these men. This ceremony serves as a solemn reminder of all those men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of freedom and our way of life. The event included a traditional wreath laying, remarks by ADM Rogers and attendance by family, friends and distinguished guests.

Additional information on the NSA/CSS Cryptologic Memorial Wall and a special historical monograph highlighting SP5 Powell's and 2LT Samples' lives, service and sacrifice can be viewed via the NSA/CSS website.
