Browsing the National Security Agency Web site

The contents of this Web site may be browsed anonymously. The National Security Agency Web site automatically logs visitor information concerning the pages read, photographs viewed, and information downloaded for statistical purposes. This information does not identify you personally. The information gathered helps us to assess the content most interesting to visitors and to determine technical design specifications for identifying system performance issues. The following represents the types of information automatically collected and stored about your visit:

  • The Internet Domain and Internet Protocol (IP) address from which you access our Web site;
  • The type of Internet browser and the operating system of the computer you use to access our site;

Your Personal Information

Personal information collected via NSA.gov is used to: 1) process employment applications from individuals who choose to submit their resumes through NSA's online resume form; 2) to process requests for information under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and the Privacy Act submitted through the NSA/CSS online FOIA request form; 3) provide e-mail notifications of substantive updates to the NSA Web site to subscribers who request this service; and 4) provide information in response to comments or questions when a response is requested by the person submitting the comment or question.

Privacy Act Statement: Authority for collecting information requested through this website is contained in 10 U.S.C. §§ 1601-1614, 50 U.S.C. §§ 831-835 and 3602; Executive Order 12333, as amended; Executive Order 12968, as amended; and Executive Order 13467. DoD's Blanket Routine Uses (found at Appendix C of 32 CFR Part 310), as well as the specific uses found in GNSA 02, GNSA 03, GNSA 05, GNSA 08, GNSA 09, and GNSA 10 apply to this information. Authority for requesting your Social Security Number (SSN) is Executive Order 9397, as amended. The requested information will be used to determine your skills and experience, as well as your security eligibility for employment with the National Security Agency. Your disclosure of the requested information, except your SSN, is voluntary. Failure to provide the requested information may result in processing delays, delay the Agency in making an employment decision, or any decision at all, regarding your security eligibility. Your disclosure of your SSN is mandatory. Your SSN will be used to confirm your identity during the application process and security investigation. Failure to furnish the requested information may delay processing, affect security approvals, and ultimately affect your eligibility for employment.

Privacy on Third Party Websites

NSA uses a third-party website to facilitate interviews of applicants for employment with the Agency. When using the third-party website, you may be asked to provide that third-party with personally identifiable information (PII). If you are selected for an interview, you are encouraged to review the privacy policy of the third-party website prior to registering or using the site to fully understand how your PII may be collected or used by the third-party website. The Agency, including Human Resources, will use PII it receives through the third-party website to facilitate the hiring of qualified applicants. The Agency will secure, use, and disseminate the PII that it receives through the third-party website consistent with the Privacy Act and System of Record Notice GNSA 02. If you do not wish to use the third-party website during your application process, please notify your recruiter to discuss alternative options.

Tier 1 cookies are used for technical purposes to improve a user experience and to allow users to more easily navigate the website.

Akamai speeds the delivery of content and applications for customers through using automatic, intermediate and temporary information storage to make the onward transmission of that information to other recipients more efficient. Temporary storage processes retain information only as long as is reasonably necessary to transmit the data. Intermediate storage processes retain information only so long as is reasonably necessary for continued transmission, to maintain the security of the network and the data, to monitor and improve website performance and for related administrative purposes. Akamai does not collect, use or disclose personally identifiable consumer information.

Foresee Results software measures user satisfaction and assesses website effectiveness through optional surveys presented to website visitors. The information gathered from these surveys is used to identify and prioritize improvements to functional website elements and content for visitors. Survey users provide ratings and feedback related to a series of questions about website performance, aesthetics, usability, user experience, and so forth; however, users are not required to provide any personal information. Tier 2 cookies are used to remember if the user has already been offered the survey and to ensure that users are prompted only once every 60 days.

Urchin software collects aggregate statistics of website visitor characteristics, traffic, and activity. This information is used to assess what content is of most and least interest, determine technical design specifications, and identify system performance or problem areas. The software records a variety of data, including IP addresses (the locations of computers or networks on the internet), unique visits, page views, hits, referring websites and what hyperlinks have been clicked. Tier 2 cookies are used to distinguish between summary statistics for users who have been to the site before and those that are visiting the site the for the first time. The Defense Department does not gather, request, record, require, collect or track any internet users' personally identifiable information through these processes.

Client side opt-out mechanisms allow the user to opt out of web measurement and customization technologies by changing the settings of a specific application or program on the user's local computer. For example, users may be able to disable persistent cookies by changing the settings on commonly used web browsers.
